Tel: (413) 572-5747 Ely 336-A

Madeleine Cahill came to Westfield State in 1995, after having earned her undergraduate degree in English at Mount Holyoke College, and her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Communication from UMass Amherst.

Currently, Maddy teaches Communication Department courses including: Intro to Human Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Communication History, Professional Communication, Intro to Film, World Cinema/Global Film, Documentary Film, and Silent Film.

Communication Department courses that Maddy has taught in the past include: Communication Theory, Communication Ethics, Intro to Mass Communication, Intro to Video Production, Writing for the Media, Writing for Radio & Television, Film as Mass Communication, Women & Film, and Film & Gender.

Maddy began her teaching career as a corporate trainer, teaching professional development courses, such as: business writing, editing, time management, interviewing, train the trainer, employee supervision, performance evaluation, customer service, goal-setting & self-esteem, and interpersonal communication.

Training future teachers is a particular interest of Maddy's. One of the highlights of her years in the Comm Department has been working with student Teaching Assistants Jill Monson '05, Michelle O'Rourke '06, and Leah Kaplan '08, Stephanie Servideo '12, Dave Cisek '12, Mary Zagula '13, Annie Kelley '13, Sarah Dowd '14, Gabi Stephenson '14, Nate Canty '14, and Tom Durkee '14. Comm majors with an interest in a teaching career are welcome to discuss the possibilities of a Teaching Assistantship with her.

For 15 years, Maddy volunteered at Womanshelter/Companeras (Holyoke's battered women's shelter). Her experiences there have made her greatly concerned about the prevalence of relationship violence, so she encourages anyone who wishes to discuss this issue to approach her about it.

Keeping in touch with alums is especially important to Maddy. If you are a Comm alum who would like to get back in touch, please email or phone. You're more remembered and missed than you think you are!
