This course focuses on the history of the Physician Assistant profession from its inception to present day status. The students analyze PA education, PA-MD relationship, PA legislation & regulations, and organizations involved in the profession. This course focuses on the business aspects of health care and health care delivery systems. The topics to be covered include health policy, safety and prevention of medial errors, quality improvement, risk management and malpractice issues. The student will learn how to obtain and maintain a license and credentials to practice. An introduction of billing and coding will be presented to allow the student to document coding during the clinical year.

The course is designed to develop critical thinkers and solidify medical concepts through application. Students will learn clinical skills and work in interprofessional teams in the Simulation Laboratory and community clinical settings to attain these goals. The Simulation will occur with small group learning facilitated by PA Faculty. Professionalism, technical skills competencies and public health service learning will also be emphasized. Areas of study include: infectious disease, dermatology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and pulmonology.

The course is designed to develop critical thinkers and solidify medical concepts through application. Students will learn clinical skills and work in interprofessional teams in the Simulation Laboratory and community clinical settings to attain these goals. The Simulation will occur with small group learning facilitated by PA Faculty. Professionalism, technical skills competencies and public health service learning will also be emphasized. Areas of study include: cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology, oncology, renal, endocrinology, psychiatry, and genitourinary.

The Integration 3 Course is a hands-on application of knowledge acquired across the PA courses maintaining a curricular thread. The course is designed to develop critical thinkers and solidify medical concepts through application. Students will learn clinical skills and work in interprofessional teams in the Simulation Laboratory and community clinical settings to attain these goals. The Simulation will occur with small group learning facilitated by PA Faculty. Professionalism, technical skills competencies and public health service learning will also be emphasized. PAS 0645 - Evidence Based Medicine

The Evidenced Based Medicine course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of evidence-based medicine, epidemiology and biostatistics, including acquiring the skill of critically reading medical literature to apply concepts to patient care. This course is designed for adult learners and will include, but is not limited to, independent, online and small group learning environments.

PAS 0646 - Transition to Clinical Practice
Credits: 3
This course is intended to help the student transition from the didactic phase into the clinical phase by establishing the expectations and etiquette for the clerkship phase. Additionally, this class introduces the student to the clinical clerkship experience of the PA program. In preparation for the clerkship phase, clerkship policies and procedures will be presented. Additionally, professional issues, cultural thinking, medical economics, healthcare finance, and medicolegal issues will be reviewed. Patient assessment skills (including radiology, EKG, and lab data analysis) and practical skills will be reviewed as will competency will be evaluated.

Students will establish clinical competencies through radiology, EKG, medical lab, and simulated patient scenarios. Students will be self-assessed for cumulative knowledge the Packrat exam. The Program will assess cumulative knowledge utilizing the PA Program Summative exam.

This clerkship is designed to facilitate the student’s ability to participate in the care of patients with addiction disorders across the lifespan. PAS 0690 - Capstone

Students synthesize knowledge and skills obtained during the program through successful completion of a research project and board preparation exercises. By displaying competency in both analyzing literature and integrating the most recent and best practices students demonstrate skills necessary for competent PA practice. Evidence of this competence will be displayed in the form of “publication ready” case based article and poster submission. Students also complete individual remediation assignments which demonstrate competency in all NCCPA blueprint topics required for NCCPA national board mastery which provide a framework for lifelong learning.
