This year, the Sankofa Organization of Diverse Faculty, Staff, and Librarians held an event to honor and commemorate graduating students at Westfield State University. Students who best embody and exhibit the spirit of Sankofa were nominated and recognized to celebrate the ideals Sankofa holds most dear: Diversity, Unity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The Sankofa Organization provides support for both faculty and staff, as well as advocating for students belonging to historically underrepresented groups. Activities on campus which promote diversity are arranged and hosted to further support Westfield State students as well as to increase awareness on these diverse communities. Additionally, awards such as scholarships are given to those who want to study abroad.

The Sankofa ceremony took place on May 2 in the Scanlon Banquet Hall. Opening remarks were made by President Linda Thompson and Dr. LaRue Pierce, vice president for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI). Dr. Thompson reflected on her professional history, recalling past stepping-stones and the importance of perseverance and passion in the workplace.

“Follow your passions and dreams,” she said to the group of students. “When it comes time to make life-changing decisions, reference your past experiences, good or bed, as you move along through life’s challenges.”

This year, 40 students became University Sankofa Scholars. They received Sankofa stoles to mark their initiation. “One of the most inspiring aspects of the Sankofa Ceremony is witnessing the joy and pride that students experience when they become Sankofa Scholars. It is a testament to their hard work, determination, and unwavering commitment to their academic and personal growth,” Pierce said about the event.

What makes the Sankofa Ceremony truly special is that it is a university community event. It brings together students, faculty, staff, and family members, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere that amplifies the significance of the occasion. It is a collective celebration of the resilience, achievements, and shared experiences that enrich our university community,” he commented.
