General Management
Even if you don’t have a specific field in mind, this general concentration will help you build strong communication and/or data analytic skills in addition to key areas of management required in any industry. Customize your degree with electives that match your preferences and interests.

Entrepreneurship
If you have a strong desire to do whatever it takes to bring new ideas to market, the entrepreneurship concentration may appeal to you. Learn how to start new businesses, or take over existing ones, and run them better. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge to promote and manage a business from the concept stage to the exit strategy. Choose the courses that contribute to your personal goals and desired business paths.

Human Resources
Help ensure an organization’s high-quality workforce as a human resources manager. Oversee recruiting, training, and compensation of a company’s employees. Take advanced courses in human resource management, leadership, diversity, and social justice.

Sports Management  
Designed to provide a pathway to help you pursue sports management careers like athletic director, event coordinator, facilities manager, sports marketer, sports analytics manager, and more. The sports management concentration incorporates all the requirements of a Business Management degree with the flexibility to create a sports management concentration.

You’ll learn to address a wide variety of challenges—financial, material, human, legal, political, and environmental by learning the interpersonal systems and strategic skills to build and manage effective business teams.

Program Mission

The mission of the Management and Marketing Department is to provide a quality program of undergraduate education in the areas of management and marketing to the citizens of the Northeast region. As a comprehensive university, we focus on serving students who are seeking a high-quality education at an affordable price. Our program prepares students to be successful and productive members of any organization they join, enables them to contribute to the greater good of society, and provides them with a framework to continue expanding and learning throughout their personal and professional lives.

In pursuit of this goal, we provide a fundamental grounding in a core body of knowledge through the university’s common core. This exposure to multidisciplinary studies and cultural, and global diversity is complemented by our departmental business core requirements.

Program Description

The Management major focuses on a mix of theoretical and practical management knowledge and skills that will enable students to work as professional managers and leaders of modern organizations. Students learn to address a wide variety of challenges-financial, material, human, legal, political, and environmental-by learning the interpersonal, systems, and strategic skills to build and manage effective business teams. 

The Management major consists of 75 credits. All students must complete 39 credit hours of the Business Core, 18 credits of non-business related courses, and 18 credits of Management coursework in one of the four concentrations: EntrepreneurshipGeneral Management  Human Resource Management, or Sports Management.

Entrepreneurship - Entrepreneurs start new businesses or take over existing ones and run them in better ways. The Entrepreneurship concentration appeals to students who have a strong desire to do whatever it takes to bring good new ideas to market. Students learn to build, promote, and manage their own businesses from the concept stage to the exit strategy. The curriculum provides flexibility for students to choose courses that contribute to their personal goals and desired business paths.

General Management - The General Management concentration is designed for students who want to become managers but do not have a specific field in mind. The concentration allows students to build strong communication and/or data analytic skills in addition to studying key areas of management. Students will be able to choose courses that match their own preferences and interests due to the versatile design of the concentration.

Human Resource Management - Human resource managers oversee the recruitment, training and compensation of a company's employees. By ensuring a high-quality workforce, human resource managers have a critical impact on organizational success. Students choosing the Human Resource Management concentration take advanced courses in human resource management, leadership, diversity, and social justice.

Sports Management - Sports management jobs include athletic director, business development coordinator, contract administrator, contract negotiation manager, event coordination, facilities manager, sports marketer, guest relations manager, corporate partnership manager, sports analytics manager and sports agent. An undergraduate degree in sports management may be sufficient to secure employment at any level, although some positions will require graduate degrees in either law or business administration (MBA).

Additional Graduation Requirements

All students must meet the University Graduation Requirements and complete a general education or common core of studies, distributed among the different academic areas as detailed in General Education: WISE or Common Core.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to submit SAT/ACT scores or an essay when I apply?

Westfield State University does not require an application essay, SAT and/or ACT scores, or letters of recommendation (except for special program admissions).     

All first-year applicants are reviewed for admission based on their high school record. First-year applicants must meet the minimum eligibility requirements established by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (DHE) in order to qualify for admission to a state university.
